No need for the morbidity! I know you and I have different philosophies on writing and storytelling, but I feel like the conversations we’ve had on that subject are immensely valuable and illuminating, and you are damn good at what you do even if our idioms aren’t quite the same. I don’t think I’ve told you enough how much I respect your craft and dedication as a writer, and that remains constant across all your work, even the stories that are dogsleds rather than surfboards, to appropriate my fiancee’s words of wisdom. You get me to think outside my comfort zone as a writer, and it’s been damn useful. (Also, your prose and imagery are frikkin’ gorgeous and I wish I knew how to make words sound that pretty.)
Most of all, though, I like how much I can talk about with you. I like how we can have serious conversations about philosophy and craft, and in-depth discussions of creative works, and silly chats about cats and terrible seventies porn. (Which reminds me that I need to reschedule Repo Night.) You’re even more fun to talk to in person, and I wish I got to see you more than once a year — we shall see if that can happen.
You’re such a supportive and compassionate person, too, and you’ve given me a lot of encouragement and kindness when I’ve been feeling down and awful. It’s meant a lot, and I really hope I can do the same for you. <3
